Nominated for: BEST Theatre Group
Lantern Theater Company is committed to an authentic and intimate exploration of the human spirit in our choice of classics, modern, and original works. Each year, we reach a loyal audience of over 16,000 with our eclectic range of work, both on and off the stage.
Our 2011/12 Mainstage season opens with NEW JERUSALEM, THE INTERROGATION OF BARUCH DE SPINOZA AT TALMUD TORAH CONGREGATION: AMSTERDAM, JULY 27, 1656, the Philadelphia premiere of David Ives' recent off-Broadway hit about one of the greatest philosophers in history. We will celebrate the holiday season with a sophisticated, sexy, and sparkling production of Noël Coward's PRIVATE LIVES. Springtime brings a fresh production of ROMEO AND JULIET, the Bard's beloved tragedy of star-crossed lovers and a city at war. The season concludes with THE ISLAND, a funny and moving modern classic by Tony Award-winners Athol Fugard, John Kani, and Winston Ntshona. Special events will include the satiric and comic THE GREAT DIVORCE, C.S. Lewis' own favorite among his works, and the FALL PHILOSOPHY FESTIVAL: THEATER AND THE AGE OF REASON, a festival centered around New Jerusalem that will explore the Jewish experience in Europe and Spinoza's lasting influence on art, literature, and philosophy.
LANTERN THEATER COMPANY: IN CONVERSATION is our audience enrichment program, which offers an insider's look at each production with creative artists and guest scholars, plus other audience enrichment events designed to enhance the Lantern experience. Our popular SCHOLARS: IN CONVERSATION series returns in March 2012 with SWORDS, SEX & SURPRISES IN SHAKESPEARE'S VERONA.
Our award-winning ILLUMINATION program engages local students and adults in the world of theater through in-classroom residencies, student matinee performances, and teaching artist training for after school programs.

The Lantern is a Philly gem and a National Treasure. It is the best Shakespeare this side of the Atlantic and the only Shakespeare to equal the RSC.
