Week 1 Update: Philly's got a Sweet Tooth

One week of voting is in the books and Philadelphia area voters have already submitted 33,000+ votes. You mean business this year! If the first week of voting has taught us anything it's that voters are still obsessive about their cheesesteaks and hoagies. Those two categories have each racked up over 600 votes so far.

But after wading through the cheeze whiz and sub rolls, we've found that Pliladelphia voters may have a secret soft spot for the sweeter things in life. That's right, we're on to your secret Philadelphia: you've got a serious sweet tooth. These three categories have gotten a lot of love so far…

Best Cupcakes

Jenkintown's Velvet Sky Bakery has leapt out to an early lead. Susan C. thinks the "carrot cake cupcakes are fabulous" while Andrea B. can't get enough of the "best red velvet cake ever." Clocking in at #2 is Rittenhouse Square's Pamcakes. Jesse W. thinks the "triple chocolate is off da hook" while Sandra K. loves that the cupcakes aren't too sweet and adds "if i'm going to indulge, it'll be at Pamcakes." Karen A. keeps up with new flavors on Facebook where they let "their fans know what special flavors they just made!" It's too early to count out last year's winner Philly Cupcake. Laurel H. doesn't seem too impressed with the competition: "I will never budge. Best carrot cake I've ever tasted. Philly Cupcake owns my heart."

Best Ice Cream

Olde City's The Franklin Fountain is out to the early lead. Magan M. "loves the old time atmosphere" while Amber D. "can't pass it up when she's in the neighborhood." Last year's winner Roxborough's Custard & Cakes Creamery is hot on their trail. Alison S. recommends the "chocolate and banana milkshakes" and Joseph F. adds "the soft vanilla ice cream is the best i've ever had!" Chestnut Hill's Bredenbeck's Bakery and Ice Cream Parlor rounds out the top 3. The baked goods get a lot of attention, but as Paul R. puts it, it's all about the "mint chocolate chip, baby."

BEST Water Ice

John's Water Ice of Bella Vista holds the top spot for the time being. Andres V. breaks it down for us: "[t]here are many in this city worthy of this title but John's is classic and goes the extra mile on quality. Always worth the wait." Rocco's Italian Ice is not far behind in second. Wendy D. loves how "every flavor hits every taste bud" while Nate D. has a soft spot for the "strawberry / lemonade." Don't count out last year's winner, the Yardley Ice House. Katie K. loves the "rich original flavors" while Rob G. is more specific in his entuhsiasm: "Peanut Butter Cup water ice! YES!!!"

OK, we're hungry. Tell us where YOU go to satisfy your sweet tooth. Your secrets are safe with us (OK, maybe that last part was a lie).
